We will fully match or exceed any educational stipend or scholarship for students admitted from service programs, including Peace Corps, AmeriCorps, City Year, Teach for America, and the U.S. military. We also waive the application fee for all Service Scholar applicants and have waived the GRE score requirement for everyone who applies to the Friedman School.

The goal of the service scholarship program is to attract prospective students with service backgrounds, establish a larger community of service-oriented students within the Friedman School, and to encourage high-level careers in service and leadership after graduation. Our Service Scholars organization is an active and engaged group of students and leadership at the School that is dedicated to creating an ecosystem of service.
Service Scholars is a student-led organization that welcomes those who have a passion for community service and engagement. Our members include Friedman students who have served or are currently serving in Americorps, the U.S. Peace Corps, or the military; those who have volunteer experience; and those with no service background (yet!) who simply want to give back to the community. Service Scholars members have volunteered with local organizations and helped organize several initiatives around campus, and we are always open to new ideas about how we can serve the community!
Our organization aims to
- establish a larger community of service-oriented students within the Friedman School
- build relationships by giving back to our local communities and serving others together
- solidify the skills we learn at the Friedman School through hands-on projects and initiatives related to nutrition, and
- encourage a lifelong commitment to service including high-level careers in service and leadership after graduation.
Examples of past Service Scholars efforts
- Service work: Volunteering together at Daily Table, Community Servings, and Project Bread Walk for Hunger
- Initiatives: Warm clothing drive, Milk with Dignity Campaign, Friedman School mini library in student lounge, Service Scholars Connector, Service Learning in the classroom, welcome cards for refugees, bake sale fundraiser to support Ukraine aid workers
Professional development: Tisch College presentation on conducting community surveys, discussion with Hayley House leadership team, discussion and feedback session with Service Learning pilot program faculty and TAs
