"Sustainable Regional Food Systems: A Northeast Perspective"
Consumers and researchers are paying more attention to local- to regional-scale food systems, systems which connect food producers and consumers in the same region to enhance the environmental, economic, social and nutritional health of a particular place. The explosive growth in farmers' markets is but one example.
The reasons behind this interest are complex, ranging from the USDA's Know Your Farmer initiative to economic development. The Northeast U.S. is characterized both by a century-long decline in farming and an intense interest in food systems at scales other than trans-continental or global. Join Dr. Timothy Griffin for a conversation about the unique aspects of the Northeast region, as well as ongoing food systems research at the regional scale.
