"Transforming Food Systems: What Needs to Be Done!"
Abstract
A panel including Drs. Kennedy, Webb and Lartey will discuss the critical elements of food systems that must undergo dramatic transformation in order to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 2 - Zero Hunger. An emphasis will be placed on the specific activities for stakeholder groups - government, private sector and civil society - that collectively will contribute to achieving healthy food systems.
Speaker Bios
Eileen Kennedy
Eileen Kennedy is a former dean of the Friedman School. Currently a professor at the School, Kennedy's research interests include assessing the health, nutrition, diet and food security impacts of policies and programs; nutrient density and diet diversity; and agriculture nutrition linkages. She is a member of the High Level Panel of Experts on Food Security and Nutrition of the UN Committee on World Food Security. Formerly a member of the UN SCN Advisory Group on Nutrition. She founded and was the first Executive Director of the USDA Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion. She created the Healthy Eating Index which is used as a single summary measure of diet quality. She is currently a member of the World Economic Forum's Global Council on Food Security and Nutrition.
Anna Lartey
Anna Lartey is currently a Professor of Nutrition at the University of Ghana. She was the Director of Nutrition and Food Systems Division at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, Rome, Italy from October 2013 to December 2020, where she led FAO’s work on Food Systems for Nutrition. Prior to that Anna Lartey was a Professor of Nutrition at the University of Ghana (1986-2013). She was a Fulbright fellow (1994-1998) at the University of California, Davis, USA. She worked as a researcher in Sub-Saharan Africa for 27 years. Her research focused on maternal and child nutrition. Anna won the University of Ghana’s “Best Researcher Award for 2004”. She held the International Development Research Center (IDRC, Canada) Research Chair in Nutrition for Health and Socioeconomic Development in Sub-Saharan Africa (2009-2014). She is the recipient of the Sight and Life Nutrition Leadership Award for 2014. Anna Lartey was the President of the International Union of Nutritional Sciences (IUNS, 2013-2017). Anna was awarded a Doctor of Science honoris causa, by McGill University in June 2018.
Patrick Webb
Patrick Webb is the Alexander McFarlane Professor at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy. His research foci include food security, nutrition, economic development, humanitarian response, climate crisis, policy and programming, diet quality, global health, and zoonosis spillover.
