Biography

Dr. Alice H. Lichtenstein, DSc, is the Stanley N. Gershoff Professor of Nutrition Science and Policy at the Friedman School and a Senior Scientist and leader of the Diet & Chronic Disease Prevention for Healthy Aging directive at the HNRCA. A globally recognized expert in cardiometabolic health and dietary fats research, she investigates how diet influences cardiometabolic risk—ranging from trans fatty acids and modified plant oils to soy protein, sterol/stanol esters, and glycemic index. Her work spans clinical trials, biomarker‑based population studies, and challenges of conducing systematic reviews in the field of nutrition, all aimed at strengthening evidence‑based nutrition policy.

Dr. Lichtenstein has served numerous professional committees, including the Food and Nutrition Board and Standing Committee on for the Review of the Dietary Reference Intakes Framework of the National Academy of Medicine. She was a member of the 2000 and vice-chair of the 2015 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee for the USDA and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and vice-chair of the NHLBI Adult Treatment Panel. She currently serves as Editor‑in‑Chief of the Tufts Health & Nutrition Letter. Dr. Lichtenstein received the Award of Meritorious Achievement from the American Heart Association, a Mentorship Award from the American Society for Nutrition, and an Honorary Lifetime Membership Award from the National Lipid Association in recognition of unusual expertise and contributions to clinical lipidology. She was elected a Fellow of the American Society for Nutrition and the American Heart Association. She was awarded an honorary doctoral degree from the faculty of medicine at the University of Eastern Finland and recently received the Alumni Award of Merit from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
