Course Description

This special topics course will review the impact of various nutrients (in both deficient and supplemental states) on maintaining the homeostasis of the immune system during physiological and pathological states as well as during different developmental stages of life. The implications for disease development and/or prevention will be discussed. Special emphasis will be given to understanding the mechanism of nutrients' effect on the immune system at biochemical, molecular and cellular levels. The role of nutrient status in maintaining "optimal" immune function and "disease prevention" and its implications for determining the recommended dietary allowance will be discussed. Not being offered offered Fall 2017.
