Course Description

To enroll in a Directed Study course, please complete and submit the Directed Study Course Proposal Form (available at: by the semester's Add Deadline to the Registrar's Office so the Directed Study course may be manually added to your schedule in SIS.

  • A Directed Study course is a mechanism for a student to receive academic credit for work completed under the tutelage of a faculty member. This is generally on a one-to-one basis with the student taking major responsibility for his/her progress. Research conducted in a laboratory during a Directed Study project can be either problem-oriented or technique-based.
  • Directed Study courses must be supervised by Friedman School faculty.
  • The grading basis is available as Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory or Letter grade.
  • First-year students should check the NUTR 297 code on the form, second-year students should check the NUTR 397 code on the form, and PhD students should check the NUTR 497 code on the form. 


Graduate standing or instructor consent.
