The AmeriCorps VISTA member will build upon the foundation of a recently developed gleaning initiative for Cumberland County. The member will strengthen existing relationships with current participants and actively recruit new program participants. Managing the information infrastructure, including web and social media, will be important elements, as will be tracking and documenting the distribution of gleaned food. The AmeriCorps VISTA member will also work with people organizing community meals to integrate local food into their projects. Other responsibilities include strengthening the volunteer infrastructure and supporting our efforts to build food security in public schools.
The overall goal of the Food Fuels Learning initiative is to increase food security for Portland students and families. It is critical to coordinate food programs to maximize efficiency and access all nutrition resources available to our community. The AmeriCorps VISTA member will develop digital and physical infrastructure to allow more students to take advantage of summer and school year food programs. Other responsibilities include strengthening the volunteer infrastructure and supporting our efforts to build food security in public schools by representing the CCFSC in local committees.
This project's goal is to establish infrastructure that supports more nutritious food being available to people vulnerable to food insecurity and more people participating in solving hunger. The VISTA will coordinate efforts to bridge the gap between consumers with limited resources and locally produced nutritious food. The VISTA will develop production, processing and distribution systems. The AmeriCorps VISTA member will build the capacity of local organizations to support an empowerment network that will elevate the voices of people with direct experiences of poverty to promote solutions.
