Bio
Jerold R. Mande is the former Deputy and Acting Under Secretary for Food Safety at USDA where he was an appointee of President Obama’s administration.
He brings a wealth of experience in public health, nutrition, and public policy to the job. He has worked for three U.S. presidents. He worked at the White House, at three federal agencies, in the House and Senate, and at Yale University School of Medicine. In these positions, he has succeeded repeatedly imagining major new policies then guiding them to achieve often transformative change. For example, as Al Gore’s health and environment aide in the House and Senate, he created the system to match organ donors and recipients. At FDA, he led the design of the Nutrition Facts food label, refashioned food safety, and investigated and regulated the tobacco industry. At USDA, he helped refocus our nation’s feeding programs on improving health and preventing diet-related disease and obesity, advancing Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move campaign.
