AFE Class of 2004

Shakti and Meredith Reeves

Shakti (AFE '03) and Meredith Reeves (AFE '04) present their research findings to the Massachusetts Farm Bureau Foundation.

The 2004 class of AFE students has successfully entered the field, with each member finding an exciting position tailored to their expertise and interests. AFE graduates continue to contribute their valuable skills and insights to a number of diverse professional settings, exemplifying the importance of interdisciplinary studies.

The Ultimate Food Fight

Larissa McKenna ( AFE '04) is working in Washington DC as the Keep Antibiotics Working (KAW) coalition coordinator, an initiative that aims to protect human health by greatly reducing the use in animal agriculture of antibiotics that are, or may become, useful in human medicine. She is excited to use her AFE-acquired knowledge as the KAW coalition pursues federal legislation, private sector collaboration, and public education to achieve the goal of reducing the threat of antibiotic resistance.

Cultivating Civil Servants

Shannon Nally ( AFE '04) took her AFE training straight to the United States Department of Agriculture, receiving a career appointment in the Agricultural Marketing Services as part of a special program for outstanding recent graduates. Shannon is responsible for compliance activities related to the National Organic Program.

Local Nourishment

Justine Kahn ( AFE '04) is working for Project Bread, a local non-profit whose mission is to alleviate, prevent and ultimately end hunger in Massachusetts. There she is involved in the Child Nutrition Outreach Program, working to increase participation in the Federal feeding programs, as well as the Farm to School initiative to help connect farmers to schools.

Preserving Environments

Meredith Reeves ( AFE '04) is working at Earthpace, an environmental strategies firm in Washington DC. As a consultant to the International Network for Environmental Compliance and Enforcement, Earthpace has completed research for projects ranging from enforcement mechanisms for air emissions trading to guidance on environmental compliance.

Sustaining Students

Tina Hartell ( AFE '04) is on the faculty at the Mountain School, a semester program in Vershire, Vermont, that integrates a rigorous high-school curriculum with sustainable living and food production. Tina teaches environmental science, facilitates farm seminars on pertinent agricultural issues, and coordinates the school's efforts in achieving sustainable technologies.
